About Skyborne
Skyborne are the UK's most experienced and innovative pilot training academy. They work tirelessly to provide a progressive, supportive and inclusive environemnt for trainee pilots to learn in.
Mental health training has formed a key part of their strategy in supporting trainee pilots through their course and onto employment within the aviation sector.
The Challenge
Mental health training was an important pillar in Skyborne's overall wellbeing strategy. However, an off the shelf product wouldn't address the unique challenges that trainee pilots face, and so staff would feel less equipped to deal with potential situations that may arise. They also wanted a way to support students post training, as well as offer wider mental health support to their students who weren't trained as mental health first aiders
The Solution
Red Umbrella were able to take the Oqual acredited mental health first aid training course, and adapt it to meet the needs of Skyborne. Using relevant industry statistics, case studies built from the real world experiences of Skyborne students (anonymised), and Skybornes mental health resources as signposting options, Red Umbrella were able to adapt the training to create a better learning outcomes and equip their staff to better support the students.
Our unique aftercare support means that every mental ehalth first aid trained staff member has access to our team of experts, via email or phone, should they find they need advice, guidance or mental health support themselves. This safety net ensures that no one has to find themselves in a situation where they aren't sure how to respond, and gives them confidence in their role.
Red Umbrella were also able to provide, through it's Carecoins offering, a pay as you go support service with immediate access to counselling and therapy support for it's students, with no waiting lists and high-quality, hand-matched therapists.
"The training was fantasitic, I learned so much and feel much better equipped to support the students who need my help"
The Results
The training has meant that Skyborne now has a team of mental health first aiders that are aware of the mental health risks to students, and are equipped to support them as effectively as possible. The aftercare support has meant that they are confident to engage with students around mental health concerns, and know that they have a team of experts to back them up if needed.
